Transition--putting on their own pull up or pants

I am a little behind with sharing some information, however I know my mom has.

For the last few weeks Ajani and I have focused on transitioning moving from 2 year old activities and behaviors to 3 year old.

Ajani recently had an earth day and I had a birth day.

Last night for the first time Ajani was able to take his pull up and put it on all by himself (ok so it was backwards) but that was a celebration and transition. At this stage your little one should begin trying to put on their own clothing. At least the easy items such as pull up, underwear or pants.

This morning he took up his sweat pants and put it on by himself.

Being able to do this is a social skill (yes I know you may be asking, "how is that a social skill") just keep in mind the Social is the largest component when looking at Social, Emotional and Cognitive skills.

Having the independence to dress oneself builds self-confidence; being able to attempt to dress oneself is also building self esteem also known as self-efficacy.

An occupational therapist would call it a life skill

The next time your little one is trying to help dress herself encourage her.

Be well

Cooperation during the infant/toddler years.

At three years old now is the time to begin teaching your toddler consequences . It is time to begin working on having your toddler cooperate . When you ask your toddler not to do a behavior she has to start understanding that you  are serious  about what you said.
Here is an example : Peter is watching his favorite show and he begins to throw the blocks. He is still impulsive and does what comes in his brain. His mother asked him not to throw any more of the train parts. "pleas do not throw the parts if you do I will turn off your show". He throws another piece. His mother turns off his show . He is crying . His mother asked "Peter what did I say "not to throw toys " he respond . That is why I turned off your show because I asked you not to throw your toys.

He is crying  , I want my show. His mother does not respond to him.
He cries for a while then he stops. You will need to continue this behavior until he understands this concept.

Leadership -begins durning the infnt/toddler years

I just thought that I would share this with you . These same skills are needed before you get to kindergarten ,social, emotional and cognitive skills.

  • Empathy: Creating a legitimate rapport with your staff makes it less likely that personal issues and resentment can creep in and derail the group. When your team knows that you are empathetic to their concerns, they will be more likely to work with you and share in your vision, rather than foster negative feelings.

  • Consistency: Being a consistent leader will gain you respect and credibility, which is essential to getting buy-in from the group. By setting an example of fairness and credibility, the team will want to act the same way.

  • Honesty: Another characteristic of leadership that lends itself to credibility. Those who are honest, especially about concerns, make it far more likely that obstacles will be addressed rather than avoided. Honesty also allows for better assessment and growth.

  • Direction: Having the vision to break out of the norm and aim for great things --then the wherewithal to set the steps necessary to get there-- is an essential characteristic of good leadership. By seeing what can be and managing the goals on how to get there, a good leader can create impressive change.

  • Communication: Effective communication helps keep he team working on the right projects with the right attitude. If you communicate effectively about expectations, issues and advice, your staff will be more likely to react and meet your goals.

  • Flexibility: Not every problem demands the same solution. By being flexible to new ideas and open-minded enough to consider them, you increase the likelihood that you will find the best possible answer. You will set a good example for your team and reward good ideas.

  • Conviction: A strong vision and the willingness to see it through is one of the most important characterizes of leadership. The leader who believes in the mission and works toward it will be an inspiration and a resource to their followers.

Making choices

It is very important that your infant/toddler is given the opportunity to make choices. You can do this by having several items available on the floor this will  allow your infant/toddler the make choices. Although your infant/toddle is not talking he brain is working and learning is taking place all the time.
Also help your infant/toddler to make decisions by asking him questions like do you want  a banana or an apple?

Language development-observation

Ajani will be 3years on 9/27/14

It is 6:28 am on Monday September  and Ajani is up . He climb on the book shelf and take out Ninos Mask. "mommy read story" Do you want to hear your favorite story his mother  asked ? She just helped him to extend his language skills. He is sitting and he is reading the book to his mom. He is counting the items on the page. He counts 12 items. He is being very gentle with the pages. He has  a lot of experience with books.

He shows his mother his finger . I have a booboo . His mother touches it  . Oh that hurts he said. He is now kicking his cones.
Ajani let's put the book away . He is not responding to that statement. Ajani lets clean up the book, he responds and put the book away. I want big world  he takes out the DVD. He opens the DVD case and is now .
He does not understand the phrase "put this way as yet but he understands clean up. We will use the other phrase more often with him long with the action . Young  children must understand language in order for them to cooperate with our request. It is very important for you to be in tune with your infant/toddler in order to guide them along the developmental line.

The new research on the brain

Did you know that when your baby is born her brain is only 25% developed and at 3years old her brain is 85% the size od the adult brain?
Researches found that the first few  years of life has an impact of how your brain is wired. It is vey important for you to give positive experiences to your infant/toddler in order to connect the different parts of the brain." We must remember .The fist few years of life are not a rehearsal. This is the real show. Children  do not really have an opportunity to try it later. Irvin Harris

You have the opportunity to help to shame the development of they young brain.

Transition- Reading

Transitions are good but can be challenging . For  infants/toddlers it is one of the ways that you guide them along the developmental mile stones . Being in tune with your infant/toddler allows you to help with them transition. Ajani is able to identify 18 letters of the alphabet . He has a lot of books they were used to build his cognitive skills ,vocabulary  and letter recognition and language.

We are now transitioning him to books with three letter words and  large  print .Many of his toys are  labeled. He is now noticing words . He is very interactive whenever he is being read with. I say this because there is a difference between reading to an infant/toddler and  reading with an infant/toddler. When you read with an infant /toddler the child is sitting on your lap this gives her a chance to interact with the book. She can touch the book , talk about what she is seeing . It is fine if she is just reading the pictures. You can ask her: Can you tell me what else you see?

Parent involvement

The new school year is here and there will be meetings ,parent teacher conferences for you to attend.
It is very important for you to attend these meetings . Parent involvement is the most critical ingredient  for  positive child outcomes.
Many times parents say "I do not have the time". Managing time is very important ,remember that you are a parent for the life of your child and putting your time  critical.

  • Parent involvement can be done in a number of ways . Here are a few ideas.
  • The fist step is building a relationship with your school/.childcare program.
  •  Positive communication is the key  building  relationships
  • If you have been to college you can discuss that with the class
  • You  can volunteer to discuss your career
  • If you  work close by you can invite the class for  a tour
  • You can donate items
  • You cam speak about your culture
  • You can volunteer/ trips/classroom
  • You can do a read a book
  • You can help to plan a show
  • You can have your friend donate items to the class :speak with the teacher to find out their need
  • If you play an instrument the teacher can have you as a special guest
Also network with the parents in your class exchange emails/phone numbers this way you can stay informed about what is going on in your child's class and the school community. Parents can also take the kids out on the week-ends.
We hope you will find these tips useful.

Planning a head

We know the challenge of adjusting to being a new parent/caregiver . Now you may need to take the baby to a sitter or a day care or the caregiver  may be coming to the home.
Here are a few tips that will help to have a smooth transition in the mornings
  • Pack the items that are needed the night before . This allows you to have  a less stressful morning
  • Hang the bag on the door knob or leave it close to the door
  • Have your   toddler help you to back the bag
  • If she is going to a sitter use the same sheet/blanket
  • Label  them with her name
  • Have your toddler help to decide the colors of the change of clothing that you will take
  • Have her help you to count the items as you put them in the bag
  • Keep her jacket and her shoes the same  space
  • When you put  her jacket on zip it half way and allow her to finish zipping it
  • Have a conversation with your infant/toddler while you both are putting the items in the bag
  • Name the items as you put  them into the bag
  • Allow your infant/toddler to walk down a few steps  both in the morning and evening
  • Keep a calendar and out all your appointments in it or you can use a note book . Check it the night before. Get a bulletin board and put all school notices on their if you have an older child assign her that job . He will be responsible for checking what needs to be done and remind you a day in advance.

These are life skills that you are teaching your infant/toddler. They will not understand the importance of it but as they get older and have several things to do they will put those  skills into practice.

Last week my 16 year old had an appointment and when she got up she showed me the items the she needed to take with her and the said "look mom I am prepared".

Critical Thinking durning 0-3 years-Puzzles

Puzzles are great for problem solving ,critical thinking  and fine motor skills. It also helps your toddler to learn how to focus and it is also pre-math skills. Your toddler also learns a variety of other skills including language, letters and vocabulary. Your toddler also learns persistence when he gets frustrated and you say these words "you  do not need to be frustrated let's try again" or try that piece some where else. Your toddler is learning new skills and will get frustrated therefore you need to help him to build his confidence. Here Ajani is a little over 2yrs old .

Observation- Developes a creative mind

Today September 7th ,2014 we were in  hotel in Maryland and it is Ajani's mom birthday. We decided to sing her happy birthday. When the song was finished Ajani took up the remote for the TV handed it to his mother and said " here is your candle".

We starred for a while but was not very surprised because he has had many opportunities  to practice pretend play. Those opportunities  allowed him to develop  his creativity and his self-confidence.

Creativity is a skill that is needed for  kindergarten. When your toddler takes up a yellow banana and begins to use it as a phone do not say "that is not a phone it is a banana". If you do that you will be interfering with the foundation of brain development.

Ajani will be 3yrs old at the end of the month.

Pre-writing skills--practicing control

Here Ajani is 2.3 years old  and he is writing big circles. He is not able  control his hand as yet. The important thing is that he is getting the experiences with writing tools. He is getting a chance to build is fine motors skills. Many children are  referred for occupational therapy and  one of the reasons is when their finger muscles are weak.

Me Time--let them relax

Infants/toddlers  are developing their personalities and need time to be alone and just relax. Your home must allow for quit space. It should also be baby friendly. Infants/toddlers need their me time where they get a chance to reflect .

The ability to balance

A young child's ability to balance is very important . The  this is a skill that is need when walking up and down steps, running on the playground etc . The section of the brain that is responsible for balance is called the cerebellum. You should allow your baby to  take risk like what Ajani decided to do. His mom was wondering what he was doing . I asked her to just   allow him to discover his experience.

Pre-writing skills --Circles are first

Ajani made these small circles he was 2.5 year old . He made these on his own. Giving your infant/toddler writing tools at 12months will allow them to develop their fine motor skills in their fingers and wrist . They will also get the experience with writing tools. Ajani would make big circles when he was much younger because he did not have control of his muscles ,his fingers and his yes. He has access to writing tools and is able to write when he chooses to. This is a part of social, emotional and cognitive skills  building competence, self-esteem and fine motor skills. The brain is developing at a rapid pace and must be given a variety of experience that will help your baby to be in kindergarten. Toddlers  write circles first .

Pretend play- A skill tht is needed for kindergarten

The ability to pretend is a very important skill that your toddler needs to learn before their 3rd birthday. Pretend play allows toddlers to draw upon their schema, prior knowledge. Today while driving on the highway in Virgina  Ajani decides to do knock, knock  jokes. He said knock, knock, "who is there I asked" " Miss Jay and Emprer" he is not yet able to say Emperor  as yet.
Pretend play allows  toddlers to develop many skills that they will need when they get to kindergarten.
Children must be provided with tools that will give them the  experiences that will allow them to develop the many skills that pretend play offers.

Pre writing skills--give opportunities with little pressure

Experience is the key to brain development. Infants/toddlers must be given the tools that will allow them to be successful in kindergarten. Young children learn from repetition and will learn most of the skills that are needed on their own but they must be given the  opportunity to practice without pressure.
